Essential Job Functions WorksheetThis
worksheet is designed to help determine the essential functions of each job, as
required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Essential job functions are those that constitute the fundamental
requirements of the position and are distinguished from marginal functions.
Cornell Cooperative Extension and other entities covered under the ADA
may not "discriminate against a qualified individual with a disability
because of the disability of such individual in regard to job application
procedures, the hiring, advancement, or discharge of employees, employee
compensation, job training, and other terms, conditions, and privileges of
employment" (ADA Title 1, section 102). This worksheet should be
completed before initiating the hiring process. Descriptions
of functions should contain the physical and mental elements of performing them.
For example, instead of saying merely "serving food," mention
that this involves "frequent bending, scooping, and extending arm."
Qualifications and standards must be job-related and consistent with operating
necessity. They must not arbitrarily
screen out people with disabilities. Since
each position has several job functions, we have included space for two
functions on the back of this sheet. Additional
copies can be made to add more functions.
