 Listed below are items to consider for a thorough job description. 

Job Title

Department (or who reports to)

Work Hours - all hours required to work and overtime requirements

Minimum Qualifications

            Minimum Education Required (if any)

Minimum Experience (if any)

            Licenses Required—professional, drivers, chauffeurs, etc.

            Specific Personality Traits—outgoing, independent, self-motivated, etc.

Special Skills Needed—equipment and machines must be able to operate; proficiencies    required in typing, shorthand, 10-key; computer and software skills; phone skills, etc.

Knowledge—i.e., hardware or plumbing background, mechanical or math aptitude, knowledge of a specific geographic area or certain regulations, etc.

            Ability to perform essential functions and meet physical demands

Work Environment - Percentage of time spent indoors or outdoors along with other relevant details i.e., standing on concrete floors; exposure to temperature extremes, detergents, dust, fumes, etc.

Essential Duties - Summarize the work into major job duties with supporting task statements. Then decide which of these duties and tasks are essential—either because they are critical to the job or because they require a large percentage of time. 

Physical Demands - List frequency or percentage of time person would be doing actions such as: sitting, bending, standing, walking, climbing, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting, etc.

Special Requirements - include any additional requirements such as travel, on-call work, union membership, providing own vehicle, clean driving record, etc.

Appearance or Dress Code - good public contact, uniforms, professional dress; your  established rules concerning such things as hair nets, hair length, etc.

Special Equipment Needed - tools, hard hats, etc.

 

Remember—an accurate written job description that you adhere to can be protection against discrimination in hiring by showing that your hiring decision is based on objective criteria.
