Low Cost and Other Retention Ideas

Taken from an article by: Dave Laber, PHR, Helena Job Service Workforce Center

Low Cost Retention Ideas

·        Do you allow your employees the ability to balance work/home life with a flexible work schedule or compressed workweek?

·        Do your employees understand “why” their job is important?  How their role in your organization contributes to the bottom line?

·        Does their supervisor appreciate their efforts?  Equally important, do they know your organization appreciates them for being an employee?

·        Does the supervisor and your organization value your employees’ ideas, suggestions, or comments for improvement?

·        Does the supervisor trust and respect them? (Two way street – don’t assume your compensation alone will create loyalty, trust, or respect.  You need to earn it!)

·        Do your supervisors act like coaches or mentors, or do they resemble “Drill Sergeants”?

·        Do your employees have a genuine say or permission to make improvements on how they perform their jobs?

Other Retention Ideas

o       Profit-sharing

o       Retention bonuses

o       Pay for performance

o       Telecommunicating

o       Vacation, sick leave, or paid time off

o       Competitive compensation and benefits

o       Health insurance (usually listed very high on surveys)

o       Cafeteria benefits (allows for choices)

o       Retirement benefits

o       Stock options (awards and purchase)

o       Child care / elder care benefits (on site daycare or subsidized cost of day care)

o       Legal services

o       Company matching of charitable contributions

o       Adoption of a casual dress code

o       Concierge services

o       Campus environments (cafeterias, convenience stores, ATMs, day care centers, locker rooms and showers, gyms, and game rooms)

o       Sponsor social activities during the work day vs. traditional company events

o       Company sponsored charity event (send a team)

o       Stay in touch with alumni (former employees – newsletter – job opportunities)

o       When employees leave, encourage their success (self-employment or otherwise – ask them to stay in touch and to consider reapplying for future positions with your company)

o       Communicate programs to employees (what they are and how can they be accessed)

o       Ask your employees what can be done to improve the workplace, benefits, and programs offered
